Happy 2009! New Year, New You? January is the time most of us reevaluate our
lives, perhaps focusing on new goals for the upcoming year. Diets, exercise,
budgets often top the list.
Perhaps volunteering in some capacity is on your list of things to accomplish
this year. Patients may resolve to brush and floss more and take better care of
their oral health and overall health.
At RDH Temps we resolve to continue our relationship building with you, our
dental facilities and dental staff. We also have some exciting plans to become
more flexible. We will be announcing the specifics about our increased
flexibility at
Yankee Dental 34 and look forward to sharing these new ideas with
you!
The new year brings a new insurance benefit year for many
patients. This month's RDH Temps eNews features an excellent article on
understanding insurance benefits and documenting the appropriate information to
maximize benefit payments. Now more than ever, it is critical to
understand and work with your patients to understand the ways insurance works
and have viable options for mutually acceptable financial arrangements.
We are pleased to feature an article on Project Stretch.
Project Stretch was founded in 1988 by a
small group of dental professionals interested in providing vital dental
services to needy children. Please consider exploring opportunities with
Project Stretch if you are looking to give of yourself this year.
As we told you last month, RDH Temps can now be found on Facebook! If you are a
Facebook user, please stop by and become a fan. Facebook is a fun, easy to use
social networking site that has something to offer for all.

Dental Insurance and Your Dental Practice |
|
Ann-Marie DePalma, RDH, MEd, FAADH
Dental
insurance: you can't live with it and you can't live without it. By definition,
dental insurance is not really insurance at all, but rather a source of funds to
defray dental expenses. Do you and your patients understand the good and bad
about dental insurance and what it can and can not do? Has your practice of
dentistry and dental hygiene invested the time to
understand the realities of dental insurance? Have you
defined approaches that help patients get the most out of their insurance plans?
Dental insurance provides payment to dental providers for preventative services
and treatment options. Insurance plans vary from company to company and even
within a given company. Employers first choose which plan or plans to offer,
then the employees choose one of the plans offered. Each individual and
employer may have a number of options available to them.
As dental practices, it is not our responsibility to know what each plan covers;
there are a million and one options available. Our job is to do the most to
help the patient obtain their full benefits. Our diagnosis and treatment
recommendations should not be based on "what the insurance will cover", rather
what will treat and prevent oral disease.
If we are not documenting the actual situation the patient presents with,
including using Box 35 on the insurance form for narratives, we are not going to
obtain the most benefits for the patient. If diagnosis and treatment
recommendations are only based on what a practice thinks the insurance will
cover, the practice can actually be committing a form of insurance fraud!

Several companies, Cigna for example, have policies that are progressive. A
progressive maximum policy is one that stipulates if a patient receives care
within a given year, they are entitled to a larger benefit for the following
year. Another insurance company may offer a regressive plan, which is just the
opposite of the progressive plan. If the patient doesn't present for treatment
within a year they loose benefits the following year. We need to be able to
offer our patients the best options for their benefit package while continuing
to offer a complete diagnosis and treatment plan based on their dental needs.
Insurance companies are very intelligent. They are aware of the latest dental
research and they are all about saving money. The carriers are well-versed on
the research into the oral-systemic connection. Some have even invested in
their own research. For example, Aetna performed a research study of over
145,000 people with both medical and dental insurance and found that without a
doubt, when people maintained regular dental care, there were lower costs in
managing diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy complications and other health
issues. As a result of this research Aetna changed what they cover for dental
care for some procedures. With appropriate documentation benefits for more
frequent prophylaxis may be available for some patients. Delta, Cigna and
several other major insurance carriers have since done the same.
The case of the 12 year old Illinois patient, Deamonte Driver, a boy
who died after the bacteria from an abscessed tooth spread to his brain, has
added more fuel to the systemic connection. In this case, an $80 extraction
would have saved the boy, along with $250,000 in medical costs.

Project
Stretch - Dentistry Reaching Out to Children |

Gail Weisberg, RDH
Smile and the whole world smiles with you...
For 20 years Project Stretch has brought dental hygienists, dentists, dental
assistants and dental students together traveling worldwide to provide dental
services to children.
Project Stretch is proud to have sponsored programs in New Orleans, Alaska,
Massachusetts, Chile, Cape Verde, Africa, Mexico, Lithuania, Nicaragua, and
Venezuela.
Last April, three dental hygienists, Mary Kellerman, Deb Hesek, and I descended
to New Orleans. Collectively we have 100 years of dental hygiene experience.
We serviced 500 school children, kindergarten through 3rd grade and other older
children at a Boys and Girls Club. Checkups, fluoride varnish, and tooth prints
were done on all. Dental education using plays, videos, puppet shows and
coloring books was enjoyed by all. Never have I had such a rewarding time. We
visited LSU Dental Hygiene Program and connected with students there to help
us. In March, 2009 I am off to Mexico where Project Stretch has a year round
staffed dental clinic.
How can you see new places, meet new friends, help others, and live an adventure
with Project Stretch? Become a member. Annual dues are $25. Meetings are
held the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at our headquarters in
Natick, Massachusetts. Volunteer your time and unique talents to fundraise for
your mission. If you don't have time in your life for a mission now you can
participate in local projects. Donations of money, support or supplies are
always welcomed. Gloves, fluoride varnish, sealants, and Fuji composite are
presently needed.
Project Stretch is currently undergoing website updates; however you can also
find us on Facebook. Additional information is available by
contacting Gail Weisberg, RDH, Director, at
smilegew@aol.com or 401-368-2428.
