It's Mardi Gras time!  Mardi Gras is a festival of music, floats, parades, picnics and excitement.  The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced to Medieval Europe.  The overall theme is to forget your problems and have fun!

Though we have no official Mardi Gras plans, what an exciting time this is for RDH Temps!  As you may already know, RDH Temps announced our new Flexible Rates at Yankee Dental Congress in January.  The response has been overwhelmingly positive to this change and we are excited to begin Flexible Rates on March 1st!

As with anything new, there are questions about Flexible Rates.  This issue of RDH Temps eNews will address many of the most commonly asked questions about this change.  If your question is not answered here, please be sure to call us.  We are available to answer your questions, about Flexible Rates or anything else, Monday through Thursday from 7:00am to 9:30pm and Friday from 7:00am to 5:30pm.  Our phones are monitored remotely from 5:30pm Friday through 9:30pm Sunday.

Massachusetts and New Hampshire dental hygienists must renew their dental hygiene licenses this year.  License renewals have arrived.  If you have not received yours, be sure to contact the state dental board.  Also, New Hampshire is making changes to the date for license renewals going forward.  Be sure to read the information below regarding this change.

The response to the article about
Project Stretch was very positive.  Gail Weisberg informed us she has had several inquiries from dental hygienists anxious to become involved with Project Stretch.  We are sure you will find the experience rewarding.

If you would like RDH Temps to share information  relevant to dental professionals, please let us know.  We welcome contributions to RDH Temps eNews!

FAQ - Flexible Rates

RDH Temps announced our new Flexible Rates at Yankee Dental in January.Questions
Your response has been overwhelmingly positive.  We hope to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Flexible Rates in this article.  If your question is not answered here please call us at 800-462-8367.

Q.  How will the Rate be determined?
A.  The dental facility will determine a base pay rate based on prevailing wages in the area and other factors.

Q.  What information will be used to establish prevailing wages?
A.   Facilities may consider the rate they pay their own staff, confer with colleagues in their area and/or request input from RDH Temps to establish the rate they will offer.  RDH Temps has compiled data from surveys, staff and facility feedback and trade publications to assist facilities in determining their offer rates.

Q.  Does a temp have to accept the rate a facility offers?
A.  No.  If you feel the rate being offered is not appropriate for a geographic area you can propose a rate.  If nobody accepts the job at the offered rate we will present the counter offer to the facility and call you back if the facility accepts.

Q.  Why is RDH Temps trying to lower wages for dental staff?
A.  The purpose of Flexible Rates is to accommodate wages in all geographic areas.  This is not an attempt to lower wages overall.  If anything it will allow us to be more competitive and provide work in areas that previously did not request temps.  As with anything, supply and demand will be the driving force for rates.  Ultimately higher demand translates to higher wages.

Q.  What is a facility billed above and beyond the hourly rate of the temp?
A.  As always, RDH Temps will employ the temps and handle all employment law, tax code and insurance matters.  Facilities will be billed the agreed-upon base pay rate plus a percentage for direct payroll costs such as taxes, employee insurance and payroll processing.  Our low management fee will then be calculated as a percentage of pay and direct payroll costs.

Q.  Will RDH Temps make more money while temps make less money?
A.  No.  RDH Temps low management fee will be based on the pay rate and direct payroll costs.   It benefits everyone to book temps at the best rate for the geographic area.

Q.  Why is overtime no longer paid over 8.25 hours?
A.  In order to conform to the labor laws of over 40 hours per week, and to remain competitive with the rest of the dental community, it was prudent we reevaluate the way we compute overtime.
* No temp is authorized to work over 40 hours in a week without the express written approval of RDH Temps.

Q.  Must a facility offer the same base pay rate for each assignment?
A.  The Base pay rate may be changed at any time prior to the beginning of the assignment day.  You may choose to offer a higher or lower rate based on the criteria of your assignment.  You may also offer a preferred rate for individual temps you prefer if desired.

Q.  What is a preferred rate?
A.   If a facility has a particular temp or temps they love the facility may offer a special rate for that person.  Notify RDH Temps of any preferred temps as well as any preferential rates for such temps.  Once noted in our system we will always offer the preferred temp(s) their special rate.

Get to Know Patti!

Patti Bakaur joined RDH Temps office staff in 1999.  Prior to that time Patti had temped as a dental hygienist at various times throughout her career.  Some of her permanent jobs as a dental hygienist were as a result of temping with RDH Temps.

Patti BakaurA graduate of Cape Cod Community College Dental Hygiene Program, Patti has worked in many facets of the dental field including clinical dental hygiene, dental office management, dental sales and as the director of a school based dental health program.

As a dental practice manager in the 1980's Patti received her introduction to computers in the dental office.  At that time the computer required a room of its own, a small closet!   How far things have come to today when many offices have computers in each operatory.  Patti later helped transition other dental offices from paper to the electronic medium.  It is no wonder that today she is actively involved in many aspects of RDH Temps proprietary computer software and related processes.  She also assists dental offices and dental staff  with both temporary and permanent placement needs.  Patti's personal experience in dental offices is a valuable asset in dealing with both offices and personnel.

Patti resides on Cape Cod with her husband Walter.  In her spare time she enjoys spoiling her  3 nephews who live close by.  She is an avid Red Sox fan who is thrilled that Opening Day is not far off!  Who needs the Groundhog - Pitchers and Catchers reporting to Spring Training is the real sign that Spring is not far off!

The next time you have an opportunity to speak with Patti be sure to tell her you enjoyed getting to know her.
Dental Hygienist Licensing Updates

Dental Hygienists in Massachusetts and New Hampshire should have received their license renewal information by mail recently.  Current licenses in these states expire March 31, 2009.  If you have not received the license renewal information be sure to check with the state dental board.  The most common reason people do not receive the renewal information is due to a move during the licensing cycle.  Notifying the licensing board of any address changes is a requirement to hold the license.

Penalties and additional requirements to renew a lapsed license vary.

New Hampshire is in the process of changing their licensing cycle to end on April 30th rather than March 31st.  Licenses renewed from April 1, 2009 to April 30, 2009 will be subject to a fine.  As of May 1, 2009 any hygienist who has not renewed their license will be required to apply for a new license. This will include retaking the jurisprudence exam as well as additional costs.  Questions regarding New Hampshire licensing may be directed to Arlene at 603-271-4561.

Massachusetts imposes a late fee of $57 in addition to the $40. renewal fee for renewals received after March 31st. There are also specific procedures which must be followed if a license is not renewed within 90 days of the licensing cycle (June 30th). The details may be found online as follows:
Connecticut Dental Hygienist licenses renew annually the month of the license holder's birthday.  Fees and related information may be found here.

Pursuant to Section 19a-88(e)(4)f, Connecticut General Statues, all licenses issued by the PLIS have a grace period of 90 days following expiration during which time the licensee may continue to practice and renew the license.  On the 91st day, the license becomes void and the licensee must apply for reinstatement.

Rhode Island dental hygienist licenses expire biennually on June 30th of even numbered years.  Regulations in Rhode Island state that the registration certificate of all dental hygienists whose renewals accompanied by the prescribed fee are not filed on or before the first day of June, shall be automatically revoked. The Board may in its discretion and upon
the payment by the dental hygienist of the current licensure (registration) fee plus an additional fee of ninety dollars ($90.00) reinstate any license (certificate) revoked under the provisions of the Act and the regulations herein.

Rhode Island is actively working towards a paperless and verifiable licensing system and as of January 1, 2009 will discontinue wallet license cards.

Additional information may be obtained by contacting the Dental Licensing board in your state.  Clearly it is best to renew on time!
